SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 3 Salisbury University
women's lacrosse team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 23-6 on a
frigid Wednesday evening at Sea Gull Stadium in a non-conference
game. The Sea Gulls (3-0) have won 42 straight regular-season home
games since the 2003 season. Since 2007, the Sea Gulls have won 29
consecutive games at home and 25 straight regular-season victories.
Salisbury was led by junior attacker Kim
Cudmore and sophomore attacker Trish
DiGirolomo as the duo scored six points apiece on four
goals and two assists. Tewaaraton Trophy watch list candidate
Jessica Chmielewski had another superb game as she
netted two goals and passed out a game-high three assists for five
points. The senior midfielder has scored nine goals and five
assists through the first week of play. Cudmore also has 14 points
(nine goals, five assists) after three games this season. Senior
midfielder Robyn Bishop and sophomore
Logan Bilderback both scored three goals and one
assist against the Marlins. Freshman Sarah
Clemmens was the other multiple goal scorer for the maroon
and gold as she scored two goals. Junior Beth
Rhodey and sophomore Meagan Osipowich
added a goal and assist at attack for the Sea Gulls.
It didn't take the Sea Gull offense long to warm up to begin the
game as SU scored twice in the first three minutes before VWC (0-1)
snuck in a goal past goalie Sonja Stuart (two
saves) at the 25:16 mark in the first half. SU scored the next four
goals before Marlin midfielder Aimee Sraver scored twice in four
minutes to cut the Sea Gull lead to four, 7-3. Salisbury scored the
next six goals to take a 10-goal lead into halftime and continued
the streak in the second half nine more times to place the game out
of reach at 22-3 with nine minutes to play.
Stuart recorded her third win of the season as the senior goalie
played 49 minutes before sophomore Julie Ann
Caulfield (one save) entered to close out the game. VWC
senior goalie Ashley Sippel stopped 11 Sea Gull shots in the loss.
Salisbury will dive back into conference action this weekend as
the Sea Gulls host York (Pa.) College on Saturday, February 28, at
Noon.
