LA VERNE, Calif. - The Salisbury University
women's tennis team started off their Spring Break trip with a pair
of victories on Monday in California. The Sea Gulls (5-0) defeated
University of La Verne 8-1 and Whittier College 9-0.
In the day's first match against La Verne, the Gulls got off to
a quick 3-0 start after doubles play. No. 2 doubles pair of
Kelly Fahrner and Rachel Iosue
won against Megan Dean and Samantha Melero 8-4. At third doubles
Angela Tenaglia and Robyn Wendell
won 8-2 over Jennifer Baca and Claudia Chavez. The No. 1 doubles
pairing of Jackie Burr and Anna Marie
Kable defeated Nicole Harden and Rebecca Rodriquez 9-8
(7-5) in a tough match. In singles action, Burr conceded the first
match at No. 1 singles to Harden as the Leopards (1-8) earned
their only point. Iosue defeated Rodriquez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 while
Fahrner notched another victory for the Gulls at No. 3 singles with
a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dean. Kable had the most impressive victory of
the match shutting out Melero 6-0, 6-0. Wendell was the victor
against Baca 6-1, 6-3. Kristen King won at No. 6
over Vanessa Vasquez 6-0, 6-1 to close the match out and give the
Gulls the 8-1 victory.
Later in the day, the Sea Gulls traveled to Whittier College to
face the winless Poets (0-8). Once again the doubles pairs set the
early tone for the maroon and gold as SU led 3-0. Burr-Kable
defeated Rachel Aelian-Moss and Madison Stern 8-2 at first doubles.
At No. 2 and No. 3 doubles the Gulls had pair of shutouts as
Fahrner-Iosue and Tenaglia-Wendell won 8-0. In singles action, the
Gulls won in straight sets in all six matches. Burr defeated
Aelian-Moss 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Iosue shut out Stern 6-0,
6-0 at No. 2. Fahrner took down Maryrose Vigorita 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3
singles while Wendell beat Katie Davidson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. King
picked up the fourth shutout of the match for the Gulls at No. 5
over Brenda Santana 6-0, 6-0. Tenaglia capped the day off with a
singles victory of her own at No. 6 against Hannah Whitehurst 6-1,
6-2.
SU will take on No. 20 Sewanee - University of the South on
Tuesday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in Claremont, Calif.
