THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Salisbury
University women's tennis team rebounded from a slow start but it
was not enough as the Sea Gulls fell to California Lutheran
University on Thursday. The loss concludes Salisbury's Spring Break
trip where the Sea Gulls posted a 3-2 record.
Salisbury (6-2), ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic South region,
began the contest strong as junior Jackie Burr and
senior Anna Marie Kable dropped the tandem of
Katherine Guimapang and Suzuye Nomura 8-2 at first doubles. Cal
Lutheran (6-4), ranked No. 9 in the West region, picked up
back-to-back wins in the final two doubles matches to carry a 2-1
lead into singles play. Holly Beaman and Jordan Leckness posted the
first victory for the Regals on the day at No. 2 doubles with an
8-5 decision over juniors Kelly Fahrner and
Rachel Iosue. The final doubles match saw Nicole
Barnhart and Kim Kolibas drop sophomore Angela
Tenaglia and senior Robyn Wendell 8-6 at
third doubles.
The Regals increased their lead to 3-1 after a straight sets win
at No. 1 singles as Nomura defeated Burr 6-3, 6-2. The Sea Gulls
battled back to tie the game at 3-3. Iosue got things started with
a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Leckness at No. 2 singles. Kable followed
with a come from behind three set win over Kolibas as she won 4-6,
6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. It would prove to be as close as the Sea
Gulls would get as Cal Lutheran won two of the final three matches
to secure the victory. Barnhart won a highly contested match over
Fahrner 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Cal Lutheran's Holly Beaman
defeated Wendell 6-1, 7-6 at No. 5 singles. The final match of the
day saw junior Kristen King take down Guimapang
6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Sea Gulls will take a week off before beginning their
Capital Athletic Conference season next weekend. Salisbury will
play four conference matches in two days. The Sea Gulls will travel
to Wesley College on Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m. then return
home that afternoon to host York (Pa.) College at 2 p.m. On Sunday,
the Sea Gulls hit the road and will face Hood College and Stevenson
University at their respective venues.
