EMMITSBURG, Md. - The top-ranked Salisbury
University men's lacrosse team earned their 50th consecutive
victory on Wednesday afternoon as the Sea Gulls defeated Hood
College 28-1 in a Capital Athletic Conference game here on the
campus of Mount St. Mary's University.
The game originally slated to be played at Hood in Frederick,
Md., was moved to Emmitsburg, Md., because of poor field
conditions.
Salisbury (5-0, 2-0 CAC), the two-time defending NCAA Division
III national champions, have not lost a game since the end of the
2006 season. The Sea Gulls have also won 102 consecutive conference
games and 82 straight regular-season games.
The Sea Gulls had 16 different goal scorers in the biggest
victory since February 21, 2006, when SU defeated Marymount (Va.)
University 29-0.
Senior midfielder Kylor Berkman led the maroon
and gold with a six-point game as he scored four goals and passed
out two assists. Junior Mike Winter matched
Berkman with four goals. Freshman attackman Matt
Cannone, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, found the
back of the net three times and added one assist. Junior
Mike Von Kamecke, sophomores Erik
Krum (one assist) and Michael Yetter (one
assist) along with freshman Kyle Quist scored two
goals apiece. Sophomore Kyle Piper and freshman
Sam Bradman scored one goal and two assists.
Long-stick midfielder Connor Burgasser scored his
first goal of the year while freshman Evan
Hockel (one assist) recorded his first point as a Sea
Gull. Six different Gulls scored their first goal of the season
including Burgasser, Piper, junior Kevin Finn
along with freshmen Logan Keyser, Ryan
Clarke and Tim Lum. The other goals were
scored by junior defensive midfielder Will Poletis
and freshman Matt Pierotti.
Salisbury raced out and scored the game's first 23 goals before
Hood (1-3, 0-1 CAC) scored its first goal with under 12 minutes
left in the game. The Sea Gulls led 19-0 at the half.
The Sea Gulls controlled the statistical categories as they
outshot the Blazers 68-13, scooped up 74 ground balls, won 27-of-33
face-offs, made 26-of-29 clears and went 3-for-6 on extra-man
opportunities.
Hood goalie Nicholas O'Brien made 20 saves in the loss.
Salisbury will next host Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday,
March 8, at 1 p.m. in Sea Gull Stadium.
