Sea Gulls pick up 9-0 win on the first day of the CAC/ODAC Challenge

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The No. 13 Salisbury University men's soccer team continued its winning ways with a 9-0 defeat of Bridgewater College at the Capital Athletic Conference/Old Dominion Athletic Conference Challenge. The CAC went 2-0 for the day with a 1-0 St. Mary's (Md.) College win over Randolph-Macon College.

The Sea Gulls (4-0) got off to a quick start when junior defender Casey Rector (Ellicott City, Md.) headed in a ball off a cross from senior Nick Malone (Salisbury, Md.) in the game's seventh minute.  The goal was the first of the season for Rector. SU continued to control play throughout the half but Bridgewater (1-4) goalie Travis Morris (10 saves) held the Gulls in check. Finally in the 37th minute the Sea Gulls struck again off a header when senior midfielder Ben Reed (Arnold, Md.) connected with a cross in from junior forward Ben DeLisle's (Baltimore, Md.) corner kick. The Sea Gulls outshot the Eagles 18-0 in the first half and held a 12-0 corner kick advantage.

SU opened up the second half with a barrage of goals in a six minute span. The Gulls received goals from DeLisle, Chris Finney (Columbia, Md.) and Kyle Sterling (Salisbury, Md.) to push the lead to 5-0. The maroon and gold closed out the scoring with single goals by Adrian Tombini (Olney, Md.) and Malone, as well as a pair of goals by sophomore forward Ian Wilson (College Park, Md.).

Salisbury senior goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury, Md.) notched his fourth win of the season in 69 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper Josh Scotton (Delmar, Md.) (one save) preserved the shutout over the final 21 minutes. Through four games the Sea Gulls have outscored their opponents 19-0.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they take on Randolph-Macon College at 3 p.m. in St. Mary's City, Md. in the second and final day of the CAC/ODAC Challenge.
