Sea Gulls win CAC/ODAC Challenge with 7-1 win over Randolph-Macon

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's soccer team wrapped up play in the first Capital Athletic Conference/Old Dominion Athletic Conference Challenge with a 7-1 victory against Randolph-Macon College on Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls (5-0) were very balanced in the game as they had 10 different players register a point in the contest.

SU got on the board early when junior defender Justin Lambert (Silver Spring, Md.) rifled a ball in the left corner of the goal off a free kick from senior midfielder Alex Hargrove (Clarks Summit, Pa.) in the 13th minute. The maroon and gold got their game winner just three minutes later when senior midfielder Kyle Sterling (Salisbury, Md.) blasted an unassisted goal into the right corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (0-5) scored in the 42nd minute off a goal by Drew Carson assisted by Job Merkel. The goal was the first goal the Sea Gulls have let up this season.

In the second half the Sea Gulls pushed five more goals across the goal line for the 7-1 victory. SU received goals by seniors Greg Taylor (Tyaskin, Md.), Nick Malone (Salisbury, Md.) and Sterling. Freshman Adrian Tombani (Olney, Md.) and sophomore Ian Wilson (College Park, Md.) closed out the scoring for the Sea Gulls. Junior forward Chris Finney (Columbia, Md.) had three second half assists for SU.

SU outshot RMC in the match 31-5 and held a 10-2 corner kick advantage. Senior goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury, Md.) (one save) picked up his fifth win of the season in 74 minutes of action. SU senior goalkeeper Josh Scotton (Delmar, Md.) played the final 16 minutes of the contest.  RMC starting goalkeeper Colin Royster (eight saves) takes the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

Salisbury was named champions of the CAC/ODAC Challenge as they went 2-0 and outscored opponents 16-1 through two days of play. The CAC went a combined 4-0 in the tournament as St. Mary's (Md.) College won 4-0 over Bridgewater (Va.) College today. Sterling was named Most Valuable Player of the CAC/ODAC Challenge.

The Sea Gulls will open up conference play this week when they travel to Washington, D.C. for a match with Gallaudet University. This is the last season that Gallaudet will be in the CAC.
