SALEM, Va. -- The No. 11 Salisbury University
men's soccer team continued its winning streak to open the
2009 season, topping Roanoke College, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. The
Sea Gulls tallied the game's only goal in the 86th minute off
the foot of junior forward Ben DeLisle (Baltimore,
Md.) to improve to 7-0.
The win avenged one of Salisbury's four losses from 2008, a
1-0 shortcoming against Roanoke at home on Oct. 4, 2008. The last
four meetings between the two teams have ended with a 1-0 final,
Salisbury has won three of those matches.
Sunday's goal was DeLisle's second of the season,
coming off an assist from freshman midfielder Chase Nichols
(Frederick, Md.). Nichols served the ball to DeLisle from
just past midfield. DeLisle was able to settled the ball just
outside the box and ripped a shot to the back post for the
game-winner.
DeLisle's game-winner came on Salisbury's seventh shot
of the game, and was the first shot on goal.
The Sea Gull defense stood strong throughout, allowing just six
shots, three of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Greg
Wellinghoff (Salisbury, Md.) turned away all three shots
that were on target, finishing off the team's sixth shutout
of the season.
Senior midfielder Kyle Sterling (Salisbury, Md.)
got off five shots during the match, putting one on goal, following
DeLisle's score.
The Sea Gulls have not been beaten in their last 13 regular-season
matches.
Salisbury will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 23 when it hosts
No. 25 Johns Hopkins at 4 p.m.
