FORT DETRICK, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's basketball team trailed by as many as 14 at Hood College
Wednesday night, but battled back time and time again. The Sea
Gulls took just their second lead of the night on a free throw from
junior center Chris McGrew
(Burtonsville, Md.) with 20 seconds showing on the
clock, and came away with their fourth straight win, 69-66.
The game-winning free throw was only one part of another big
night for McGrew in the last three weeks. After regaining control
of the ball following McGrew's free throw, Hood (12-7, 7-3 Capital
Athletic Conference) called a timeout with nine seconds remaining.
On the ensuing play, McGrew got the steal and would get another
shot at the charity stripe, connecting on both attempts to give
Salisbury (10-8, 6-4 CAC) a three-point lead, which it would
protect for the win.
McGrew finished with a game-high 23 points, which matches his
career high, and pulled down seven rebounds while dishing out four
assists. McGrew has been on a tear recently, having set career
highs in scoring three times in the last two weeks. He has not been
doing so by putting up every shot he looks at either, he's done so
with tremendous control. McGrew has shot 79.6 percent from the
floor (43-of-54) during Salisbury's last eight games, and is
shooting 74.1 percent from the free throw line (20-of-27) in that
same time period.
Senior guard/forward Greg Palmer (Salisbury,
Md.) connected on a three-pointer with 1:22 remaining
that allowed McGrew's free throws to push Salisbury to the win.
Palmer finished with 20 points. Sophomore guard Mike Maczko (Bel Air,
Md.) scored 13 points and added six assists, matching
his career best.
The Sea Gulls will have a week off before they get back to game
action next Wednesday, hosting Gallaudet University on Wednesday,
Feb. 3. Prior to the start of that game, Salisbury coach Steve Holmes
will be recognized for his 100th win at Salisbury University, which
he achieved Saturday against St. Mary's (Md.) College.
