ARLINGTON, Va. - The Salisbury University men's
basketball team suffered a 64-59 loss at the hands of Marymount
(Va.) University on Monday night, but the good news is the Sea
Gulls still control their own fate for the 2010 Capital Athletic
Conference tournament which begins in just a week.
With the loss, the Sea Gulls fall to 8-6 in the CAC with two
games to play, but with a pair of wins they would clinch a spot in
the CAC tournament.
Salisbury (12-10) took the early lead Monday night, opening the
game on a 12-4 run, but quickly realized it was in a game that
would not be decided until the final moments as the teams traded
runs throughout the 40 minutes of play. The eight-point Salisbury
edge proved to be the largest point differential in the game.
Six of Salisbury's first 12 points came from the hot hand of
junior center Chris McGrew
(Burtonsville, Md.), including the first three-point
field goal of his collegiate career. McGrew would finish with 18
points, on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, to go with five
rebounds.
A 12-2 run for the Saints (13-10, 8-6 CAC) would turn the tables
for Marymount's first lead of the night before the Sea Gulls would
come back to take a five-point edge at halftime.
The lead would remain near a handful in the second half before
Marymount put together a 15-3 run early in the second half to take
a six-point lead, though the Sea Gulls would not go quietly.
Salisbury took a one-point lead for a moment on a three-pointer by
senior guard Greg Palmer (Salisbury,
Md.) with just under six minutes to play, but the
Saints closed the game on a 10-5 run to finish off their victory.
Palmer finished with 18 points, while senior guard Drew Dickson (Silver
Spring, Md.) dished out five assists.
Salisbury will play its next game on Wednesday, when it hosts
Wesley College at Maggs Physical Activities Center, marking the
final home game of the regular season for the Sea Gulls. The
program will recognize three seniors - Palmer, Dickson and senior
guard Devin Jones (Severn, MD.) - prior to the start of the game.
