FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Salisbury University
men's basketball team did what it needed to do Saturday, topping
the University of Mary Washington, 70-61, for a season sweep of the
Eagles. The win clinches a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference
tournament, which will begin Tuesday night.
Senior guard/forward Greg Palmer (Salisbury,
Md.) made the most of his final regular season game in
the maroon and gold, tallying 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from
the floor while pulling down four rebounds. The 25 points is the
second-highest total Palmer has come up with this season, as he has
twice scored 29.
The Sea Gulls (13-11, 9-7 CAC) closed out the game strong,
finishing on a 14-6 run over the final four minutes to claim the
win. In that closing run, sophomore forward Mike Maczko (Bel Air,
Md.) scored six of his 18 points. The point total
matches a career-best for Maczko as he connected on 5-of-10 shots
from the floor.
Salisbury was strong from the field all day, shooting 53.2
percent from the floor, its second-highest percentage this year.
Salisbury junior center Chris McGrew
(Burtonsville, Md.) finished with 10 points, marking
the seventh straight time he has reached double figures. Senior
guard Devin
Jones (Severn, Md.) dished out five assists to go with
nine points.
The nine CAC wins for Salisbury marks the most since the Sea
Gulls went 9-5 during the 2000-01 season.
Salisbury will wait for the outcome of tonight's game between
Hood College and Marymount University, scheduled to begin at 6
p.m., to find out its seed for the CAC tournament. A Hood win
tonight would put Salisbury as the No. 6 seed in the tournament,
while a Marymount win would move the Sea Gulls up to the No. 5
seed. As either the No. 5 or 6 seed, the Sea Gulls will travel for
a first-round game on Tuesday.
