SALISBURY, Md. - Fans of the Salisbury
University women's lacrosse team got an unexpected surprise on
Saturday afternoon as inclement weather in the Pennsylvania area
forced a road game against Elizabethtown College to be moved to Sea
Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls made the most of their home-field
advantage, blowing the game open in the second half to defeat the
Blue Jays 20-8.
The maroon and gold opened up scoring in the second minute
of play off of an unassisted Kim Cudmore (Bel Air,
Md.) goal. The senior attacker would go on to score
her second goal of the game with just under nine minutes to play in
the half to give Salisbury (4-0, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) a
6-3 advantage; undeterred, the Blue Jays (0-1) responded with
three-straight goals to even the score with 2:25 left to play in
the first half. The Sea Gulls refused to go into the second half
with a deficit, though, quickly netting two goals within nine
seconds of each other to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Salisbury
outshot Elizabethtown 22-11 in the first half; junior goalkeeper
Julie Ann
Caulfield (Drexel Hill, Pa.) played almost 28 minutes
of the half, making two saves.
Senior attacker Beth Rhodey (Fallston,
Md.) would add to the Sea Gull lead just 35 seconds
into the second half, giving Salisbury a three-goal advantage; two
minutes later, she dished out an assist to senior midfielder
Jess Chmielewski
(Woodbine, Md.) who netted Salisbury's 10th
goal of the game. Twenty-seven seconds later, junior attacker
Meagan
Osipowich (Hauppage, N.Y.) shot the ball past Blue Jay
goalkeeper Rachael Waldman (11 saves) to stretch Salisbury's lead
to five goals. It was Salisbury's game from that point on, as the
Sea Gulls outscored the Blue Jays 12-2 in the second half to seal
the victory. Three Salisbury goalkeepers, including Caulfield, as
well as freshmen Ali Meeks (Pasadena,
Md.) and Keli Berkman
(Salisbury, Md.) saw time in between the pipes for the
Sea Gulls. Berkman played for only 11 minutes, at the end of the
second half, but notched a team-high five saves and did not allow a
single Blue Jay goal to preserve Salisbury's 12-goal advantage.
Rhodey finished with a game-high four goals.
The win marks Salisbury's fourth straight; 12 different Sea
Gulls scored goals in the victory.
Salisbury's next contest will be on the road, against Virginia
Wesleyan College, on March 3 at 4:30 p.m. The maroon and gold's
next home game will be on March 6 at 1 p.m. against Catholic
University.
