SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University
women's tennis team celebrated its “Senior Day” on
Monday with a 9-0 sweep of St. Mary's (Md.) College in the Capital
Athletic Conference tournament semifinal match. The maroon and gold
are set to compete in the CAC championships on Thursday.
Seniors Jackie
Burr (Dover, Del.), Kelly
Fahrner (Germantown, Md.), and Rachel
Iosue (Damascus, Md.) were each honored at the match
for their four years of hard work.
The Sea Gulls wasted no time in doubles, as they took all three
matches. The first doubles team of Burr and Jillian
Poppe (Califon, N.J.) defeated Michelle Compton and
Chelsea Bradcovich of St. Mary's, 8-1. Fahrner teamed up with
freshman Rachel
Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) and took the team's
second doubles match, 8-1. At third doubles junior Angela
Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) and freshman Elaina
Iosue (Damascus, Md.) showed no mercy, sweeping the
Seahawks 8-0.
The Sea Gulls carried the momentum into singles play, as
Salisbury collected wins from Burr, Rachel Iosue, Tenaglia,
Fahrner, Lupinetti and a shut out from Elaina Iosue at fifth
singles.
With the win, Salisbury improves its record to 13-2 (5-1 CAC)
heading into the Capital Athletic Championship match on Thursday,
April 22. SU's opponent is still to be determined, and the time and
place of the match is to be announced.
