SU women's tennis sweeps CAC semifinals, advances to CAC championship

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team celebrated its “Senior Day” on Monday with a 9-0 sweep of St. Mary's (Md.) College in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal match. The maroon and gold are set to compete in the CAC championships on Thursday.

Seniors Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.), Kelly Fahrner (Germantown, Md.), and Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md.) were each honored at the match for their four years of hard work.

The Sea Gulls wasted no time in doubles, as they took all three matches.  The first doubles team of Burr and Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) defeated Michelle Compton and Chelsea Bradcovich of St. Mary's, 8-1. Fahrner teamed up with freshman Rachel Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) and took the team's second doubles match, 8-1. At third doubles junior Angela Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) and freshman Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.) showed no mercy, sweeping the Seahawks 8-0.

The Sea Gulls carried the momentum into singles play, as Salisbury collected wins from Burr, Rachel Iosue, Tenaglia, Fahrner, Lupinetti and a shut out from Elaina Iosue at fifth singles.

With the win, Salisbury improves its record to 13-2 (5-1 CAC) heading into the Capital Athletic Championship match on Thursday, April 22. SU's opponent is still to be determined, and the time and place of the match is to be announced.
