SU rolls past Stevenson; Sea Gulls will play in CAC championship game on Friday

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team squared off against Stevenson University in a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal tournament match, coming away with a resounding 18-6 victory. With the win, the Sea Gulls move onto the championship game. They are just one victory away from capturing the program's eighth consecutive (10th overall) CAC championship.

Senior attack Beth Rhodey (Fallston, Md.) was the player to watch in the first half as she dished out an astounding four of Salisbury's seven goals, including the opening score in the third minute of play. Senior attack Kim Cudmore (Bel Air, Md.) chipped in two goals and one assist in the first 30 minutes of the game. The top-seeded maroon and gold (16-1) entered halftime with a 7-2 advantage, outshooting the No. 4-seeded Mustangs (10-6) 20-10.

In the second half, Salisbury wasted no time adding to its scoring totals as Cudmore netted another goal in the 32nd minute of the game. One notable tally came off of a shot from sophomore midfielder Allie Wheatley (Cambridge, Md.), who ripped the ball past Mustang goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder with 24:24 left on the clock to register her 24th goal of the season. Senior midfielder Jessica Chmielewski (Woodbine, Md.) was also a key Sea Gull player in the win as she netted four goals; three of those goals came in the second half. Rhodey finished the contest with a game-high five goals.

Between the pipes, junior goalkeeper Julie Ann Caulfield (three saves) earned the win for the maroon and gold. Freshman keeper Keli Berkman (Salisbury, Md.) also saw time in the cage, netting two saves.

The other semifinal match-up of the night, against the University of Mary Washington and St. Mary's (Md.) College, was a close contest. Ultimately, Mary Washington prevailed with a 15-14 victory, scoring on a free-position goal with just 22 seconds left to play in the game. The No.2-seeded Eagles will now travel to Sea Gull Stadium to face the Gulls on Friday, April 23. The time of the game is to be announced; check back on www.suseagulls.com for updates.
