Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team waged battle against Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon at the Maggs Physical Activities Center but fell in the final seconds of the contest by a single point, suffering a 62-61 loss.
The Sea Gulls (7-9, 2-5 CAC) and Spartans (11-5, 5-2 CAC) both came out of the gates swinging, and the halftime score was indicative of the back-and-forth nature of the contest – York led 26-23 at the break, with its largest lead of the half being only five points. Senior guard David Pearman netted eight points in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
Salisbury's first lead of the half came just 52 seconds in with a bucket by senior center Chris McGrew to give the Gulls a 27-26 advantage. The lead would switch hands an astounding 10 times in the next 15 minutes.
As the scoreboard ticked away with less than two minutes remaining and York with a 61-56 lead, Pearman hit a clutch three-pointer to bring Salisbury to within two. With nine seconds remaining, junior forward Mike Maczko collected the ball from York's half of the court, sprinted down to the Sea Gull basket and hit a lay-up to tie the contest at 61 apiece. A Spartan free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining put York up 62-61 and, despite a long-ball attempt by Maczko, the Sea Gulls could not capitalize on the opportunity.
Pearman finished with a team-high 17 points. Senior guard Eric Johnson was also a huge contributor for the Sea Gulls, notching a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 boards.
The maroon and gold's next contest, an away match-up against CAC opponent St. Mary's (Md.) College, will take place on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m.
