Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Mike Atkins had a huge game for the Salisbury University men's basketball team, scoring a career-high 22 points, but it was not enough as the Sea Gulls fell at the University of Mary Washington, 80-75, Wednesday evening.
Atkins was outstanding from the floor, connecting on 7-of-13 field goals including 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the three-point arc. The six three-pointers made are the highest total for a Sea Gull this year while Atkins' previous high point total was 11 against Anna Maria College on Dec. 3, 2010.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than seven points at any time during the contest. The Sea Gulls (6-7, 1-3 Capital Athletic Conference) took their first lead nine minutes into the game on a pair of free throws by senior Eric Johnson; he would finish with 15 points.
The Eagles (10-2, 4-0 CAC) regained the lead before the break, stretching their advantage to as many as seven points and held a 37-34 advantage at halftime.
The second half featured 10 lead changes, including one just three minutes into the final frame as Salisbury opened the final 20 minutes on an 8-0 run which featured threes by Atkins and junior Devin Posey.
Salisbury's last lead of the night came with just over four minutes to play as Mary Washington closed the game on a 14-7 run.
Senior guard David Pearman scored 12 points for Salisbury while Posey finished with seven points and four assists.
Bradley Riester scored a game-high 29 points for Mary Washington.
Salisbury will continue CAC play on Saturday as the Sea Gulls travel to Frostburg State University for a game scheduled to being at 3 p.m.
