Night of firsts for several Sea Gulls in 24-5 victory over visiting Marymount

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team captured a 24-5 Capital Athletic Conference victory over visiting Marymount (Va.) University in a weather-plagued contest at Sea Gull Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It was a night of firsts for several members of the Sea Gull flock, as junior Evan Hockel, sophomore Brett Baer and freshmen Chris Brady, Mike Kane (two goals) and Tim Stone all recorded their first collegiate goals. Salisbury (14-0, 7-0 CAC) senior goalkeeper Tim Swinburn earned his first victory of the 2011 campaign with six saves in 45 minutes of action.

Junior attackman Matt Cannone added to the special night, as he tallied three goals in the victory and has now scored 133 career goals through three seasons. He takes sole possession of the No. 10 ranking in the program record book and is just one goal shy of matching No. 9 Greg Titus' 134 career markers.

Cannone led the way in the contest with five points, as he also dished out a pair of assists. Senior midfielder Shawn Zordani finished with three points on two goals and one assist.

Marymount (2-13, 0-7 CAC) received a game-high four points from Drew Phillips on two goals and two helpers. The Saints trotted out three goalkeepers in the contest, including Ross Fernandez who staved off seven Salisbury shots.

With the CAC victory this evening, the Sea Gulls clinch a top-two finish for the upcoming CAC tournament (April 17-23); the win guarantees Salisbury a first-round bye and a home semifinal contest in conference playoffs.

The Sea Gulls are set to host No. 3-ranked Stevenson University this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium. The winner of the contest will claim the top seed in the conference playoffs, which includes home-field advantage throughout the tournament.
