Salisbury leaps past McDaniel, 22-1

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Playing in its first-ever game on Feb. 29, the No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team defeated McDaniel College, 22-1, at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday.

The Sea Gulls dominated play from beginning to end by winning 24-of-25 faceoffs, outshooting the Green Terror, 53-18, and converting 13-of-15 clear attempts.

The SU offense was channeled through junior midfielder Ryan Clarke and senior attackman Erik Krum. Clarke finished the game with two goals and a team-high five assists to lead the Gulls with seven points. Krum scored a team-best five goals.

Krum started the game with the team's first tally, one of his three in the first quarter, which sparked an 18-goal scoring streak that lasted into the third quarter. At the end of the first period, Salisbury led by a score of 9-0. Clarke, senior midfielder Sam Bradman, senior attackmen Kyle Quist and Lantz Carter all scored in the quarter, as well.

At the start of the second quarter, Krum started the Sea Gull attack again with his fourth score before senior long-stick midfielder Evan Hockel netted his first shot for the first goal of his 2012 season. It was the second goal of Hockel's career.

Salisbury scored four more times in the quarter, including a man-up tally from senior attackman Tony Mendes, to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Bradman scored to open the third quarter. Following Bradman, Krum added his fifth score of the day to help the Gulls score four total goals in the third quarter. Junior midfielder D.J. O'Connell netted his first goal as a Sea Gull before Bradman ended the quarter with his third goal of the game.

The Gulls added four more in the fourth including goals for junior midfielder Eric Kluge and senior midfielder Shaun Church; the first scores, for them, as Sea Gulls.

All four Salisbury goalkeepers played in the game. Sophomore Alex Taylor picked up his fourth win of the season while sophomore Mitch Meredith made four saves and freshman Connor Anderson saved one shot. Freshman Dan Feeney played over six minutes in the cage, as well.

Salisbury will be on the road for its next game as the team travels to play No. 15 Gettysburg College on Saturday. The game is set for 1 p.m.
