Tennis teams top York to remain unbeaten in CAC in 2012

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams remained unbeaten in the Capital Athletic Conference this season as each team earned a convincing win at York (Pa.) College on Tuesday. The women rolled to a 9-0 win while the men claimed a 7-2 victory.

Junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Katie Youlios played at No. 2 doubles together for the first time this season for the women and the pairing worked well as the duo won their match 8-0. Junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban earned an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles while another new team of junior Victoria Handlin and freshman Allison Lutz won at No. 3, 8-3, giving the Gulls (4-6, 2-0 CAC) a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Salisbury finished the match by taking all six singles matches in straight sets, led by the 6-0, 6-1 efforts of Poppe at No. 1, Youlios at No. 4 and Lutz at No. 6. Iosue, Handlin and Alban allowed no more than four games to their York (3-6, 0-2 CAC) opponents in finishing off the team sweep.

The men took two of the three doubles matches, with the top pair of senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers claiming an 8-1 win while senior Curtis Quandt and freshman Nick Mancuso picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2.

The Spartans (4-4, 0-1 CAC) saw Nathaniel Hoskins and Tyler Cheatham pick up an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Sea Gulls (2-5, 2-0 CAC) picked up five singles wins to seal the victory, led by Mancuso's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5. Barnas and Albers each claimed 6-2, 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while senior Arthur Jackson played to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6.

The road to victory was a little tougher for junior Adam Goldberger, who picked up a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win at No. 3. York was able to pick up a three-set win at No. 4, with Hoskins picking up a 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 win.

The men will be back in action tomorrow, March 28, hosting Emory & Henry College at 3 p.m., while the next match for the women will be on Thursday, March 29 at Christopher Newport University, at 3 p.m.
