Career day for Cannone leads Salisbury past Ursinus, 16-4

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior attackman Matt Cannone took control of the No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team's offense during Wednesday's 16-4 victory over Ursinus College at Sea Gull Stadium. Cannone registered half of the Sea Gulls' offensive output with eight points by tying a career-best seven goals and adding an assist.

Cannone scored the first goal of the game off of an assist from junior midfielder Ryan Clarke to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead; a lead that Salisbury never gave up for the remainder of the contest. Senior attackman Erik Krum and Cannone both finished the first period with two goals each as Salisbury took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Sea Gull offense exploded in the second quarter; outscoring the Bears 9-0. Salisbury dominated the period by outshooting Ursinus 19-1, winning 8-of-10 faceoffs and only turning the ball over once. The team also converted on 2-of-2 extra-man opportunities.

Clarke started the second quarter barrage with his first of three goals with 7:12 left in the period. Cannone added another three goals and tallied his assist in the second for a six-point first half. Sophomore midfielder Chris Biank, sophomore attackman Rhett DePol and Krum all netted scores, as well.

Salisbury took a 13-0 lead into halftime; the second time this season that the Gulls have shut out an opponent in the first half.

Ursinus put its first point on the board in the third quarter on a goal by senior Dave Kraus before Cannone added his sixth and seventh goals that were just 17 seconds apart to give Salisbury a 15-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Bears found some life in the final period and outscored Salisbury 3-1 in the quarter. The lone Sea Gull goal was the first-career goal for freshman midfielder Mike Hanna.

Krum and Clarke both were tied for second on the team with three goals each. Krum added three assists for a total of six points which was good for second on the squad.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor made two saves and did not allow a goal in 30 minutes in the cage on the way to his sixth win of the season.

Salisbury will be in action again on Saturday in a neutral-site game against Ohio Wesleyan University at the Severn School; the contest is set to start at 3 p.m.
