Salisbury women top Washington, 7-2, men fall by same score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams split their matches with Washington (Md.) College on Thursday afternoon. The women picked up a 7-2 win while the men fell to the Shoremen by the same score.

The Salisbury women (10-9) picked up all three doubles matches with junior Victoria Handlin and freshman Allison Lutz grabbing the Sea Gulls' first point with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban made it 2-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 1; the victory was the duo's 12th of the season. Junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Katie Youlios finished off the doubles sweep by pulling out an 8-6 win at No. 2.

Iosue was able to put Salisbury on the brink of victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles before the Shorewomen (10-7) got their first point on the board with a win at No. 3. Handlin sealed the Salisbury win with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.

Youlios earned a hard-fought win at No. 4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, while Lutz picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6.

The men (9-10) took a 1-0 lead with senior Justin Smith and junior Adam Goldberger winning 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Washington (9-6) drew even with an 8-5 win at No. 3 and pulled ahead with a 9-8 (7-4) win from Kevin Papen and Aaron Ellison at No. 1 doubles. The loss at No. 1 for senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers was their first since March 21, snapping a 12-match winning streak.

Barnas earned Salisbury's lone singles win, taking his No. 1 match against Papen, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Curtis Quandt battled to a narrow 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 loss at No. 3.

The women have completed their regular season. They will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament, earning a first-round bye before hosting a semifinal match on April 23. The men, the No. 3 seed in the CAC tournament, will close out their regular-season slate at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, April 21. That match will begin 2 p.m. The Gulls will host a first-round CAC tournament match on Sunday, April 22, against No. 6 seeded Stevenson University.
