Women's tennis advances to CAC championship with 9-0 win over St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship match with a 9-0 victory against St. Mary's (Md.) College on Monday afternoon.

Salisbury (11-9), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, ran through the doubles matches with 8-0 wins from the No. 1 team of junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban, and from the No. 3 duo of junior Victoria Handlin and freshman Allison Lutz.

Junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Katie Youlios picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles for the 3-0 lead.

Salisbury's roll continued in the singles matches with Alban, at No.2, and Lutz, at No. 5, allowing their opponents just one game each; Alban won 6-1, 6-0 while Lutz prevailed 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Charlotte Urian collected a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 and Handlin came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4. Alban, at No.1, and Youlios, at No. 3, each surrendered just four games to their opponents.

With the win, Salisbury advances to the CAC championship match on Thursday at the University of Mary Washington. The teams met on March 31, with the top-seeded Eagles coming away with a 7-2 win.
