Poppe, Savage win at No. 1 doubles while Gulls drop season opener at Towson

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team opened the season on Saturday night with a 7-0 loss against Towson University at Bare Hills Racquet Club.

Against the Division I foe, the team's played with the three doubles matches counting for one point and while the Tigers (1-2) claimed the point, Salisbury got a big win from its top doubles pair of senior Jillian Poppe and freshman Natalie Savage. The duo won the first match of Savage's career, 8-5, over Ayana Dow and Ariel Burke.

Salisbury's other two doubles teams fell, but each squad was able to pick up a pair of games. Senior Elaine Iosue and sophomore Roxanne Alban lost at No. 2 and sophomores Katie Youlios and Allison Lutz lost at No. 3, each by 8-2 scores.

Poppe, at No. 1 singles, and Savage, at No. 2, each earned four games, while coming up just short in the first set of their singles matches. Poppe dropped the second set, 6-2, while Savage fell, 6-0.

Iosue, at No. 3 took five games from Burke before falling 6-3, 6-2.

The Sea Gulls (0-1) will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 at No. 27 the University of Mary Washington, when each team begins its 2013 slate of Capital Athletic Conference matches.
