Savage claims singles point as women's tennis falls at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team opened play in the Capital Athletic Conference on Saturday, falling at No. 27 the University of Mary Washington, 8-1.

The Eagles (1-0, 1-0 CAC) swept the three doubles matches, but not without a fight from the Sea Gulls.

Sophomores Katie Youlios and Allison Lutz had the closest doubles match for the Sea Gulls (0-2, 0-1 CAC), falling 8-4 at No. 3. Salisbury's No. 1 pairing of senior Jillian Poppe and freshman Natalie Savage lost 8-3 while senior Elaina Iosue and sophomore Roxanne Alban suffered an 8-2 setback.

Salisbury's lone point on the day came from Savage at No. 2 singles as she came from behind to top Cassie Bowman, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.

Senior Victoria Handlin took six games from Paige Weinberg before falling, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. After dropping her first set at No. 1 singles, 6-1, Poppe challenged Lindsay Raulston in the second, falling 6-4.

Salisbury will be off until March 3 when the Sea Gulls take on Methodist University in a neutral-site match at Virginia Beach, Va.
