Salisbury defeats Marymount in third CAC game of season

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team grabbed its 10th win of the season, defeating Capital Athletic Conference opponent Marymount (Va.) University, 16-7, on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Sea Gulls (10-2, 3-0 CAC) jumped out to an early lead with five-unanswered goals by five different players in the first quarter and never looked back. Sophomore midfielder James Burton started the scoring with a bounce-shot past the Saints' keeper after driving to the left and cutting inside to the crease.

Sophomore attackman Wade Korvin, who led the Gulls with four goals on the day, netted his first at the 5:59 mark in the quarter by ripping a shot from the left wing from 10 yards out.

After goals from attackmen, freshman Brady Dashiell, senior Zach Hill and senior Stephen Norris, Salisbury took the 5-0 lead into the second quarter.

Connor Kellogg, one of two Marymount players with two goals each, netted the Saints' first score at the 7:45 mark, but Hill answered back less than 40 seconds later, taking a diving shot on the left side of the crease and planting the ball in the back of the cage.

The teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter, with each side scoring two more, allowing the Gulls to take an 8-3 lead into the half; junior midfielder Tyler Smith netted his first and Norris added his second for Salisbury's goals.

At halftime, Salisbury led on the stat sheet in shots (30-12), ground balls (25-18) and faceoffs won (7-of-12).

Korvin opened the third quarter with his second goal at the 12:34 mark. Sophomore defender Knute Kraus picked up a ground ball, cleared it and passed across the crease to Korvin, who finished the play with a dunk over the keeper.

Smith followed with his second, and after MU added two-consecutive scores, senior midfielder Eric Kluge drove down the right side and ripped a shot into the top-right corner.

In the fourth quarter, Korvin added his final two goals, sophomore midfielder Kyle Goss netted two more and Burton scored his second to cap off the win.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Taylor played 55:02 in the cage, making eight saves for the win.

Salisbury will be back in action on Wednesday night; the Sea Gulls will welcome Stevenson University to Sea Gull Stadium for a 7 p.m. game.
