SALISBURY, Md. -- Late-game heroics by junior forward Benjamin Aryeetey sealed a 1-0 victory for the Salisbury University men's soccer team over Catholic University of America putting the Sea Gulls back in the win column.

The first half of the game played out slow as the Sea Gulls managed the only two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play. The action began early in the second half as both teams totaled 21 shots.

In the 53rd minute, Catholic (4-3-1) tested sophomore goalkeeper Drew Staedeli on a shot from outside the 18-yard box by Hunter Horvath. The high, lined ball to the top right corner of the net was pulled down by Staedeli just in time to keep the contest even.

The Gulls put on a charge of their own with 30 minutes remaining in the match holding the possession for one minute, 20 seconds, including a header and three shots. The header was the closest to goal in the offensive push, placed by Aryeetey off a flawless cross by junior forward Matt Greene inside the 18-yard box.

In the 77th minute, Salisbury (6-2) saw two opportunities slip by within seconds of one another, as Cardinals' goalkeeper Torsten Meuschke tallied his seventh and eighth save of the match. A 20-yard free kick by senior defender Chase Humphrey almost found the back of the net, but Meauschke was able to deflect the attempt. Off the batted ball, Greene made the effort but couldn't capitalize.

With less than six minutes remaining in the contest, Aryeetey helped the Sea Gulls fly past the Cardinals to snap a two-game skid. The junior transfer notched his second goal of the season with a well-placed shot over Meuschke's hands from inside the six-yard box.

Salisbury totaled nine shots on goal for the game, while the Cardinals finished with four.

Staedeli and the defense added another shutout to the record, now with five for the season. The backline consisting of Humphrey, juniors Kyle Westbrook and Logan Becker, and sophomore Cy McNeill, held strong only allowing Staedeli to make four saves for the match.

The men look on to their next game, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25, as they take on Johns Hopkins University from SU Soccer Complex. The contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
