Salisbury falls to Mary Washington in conference contest

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men and women's swimming teams fell on Saturday afternoon to conference-foe University of Mary Washington, as the men finished with a score of 159-46 and the women, 161-44. 

Men 

The men's squad started the meet off with a second- and third-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay for six total points. Senior Chris Franklin and freshmen Kevin DruryOkan Eyigor andTravis Maida recorded four points on a time of 3:52.51 for a silver finish, while senior James Gough, sophomores Colin Ault and Jake Blazer, and freshman Scott Schirmer tallied the other two points with a time of 4:00.80. 

Blazer recorded seven points individually, as he placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.68) and later, racing to a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (50.88). 

Eyigor added six points in his two races. The freshman recorded a silver finish in the 100-yard backstroke (53.37), while finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.63).

Women 

Sophomore Nicki Schult led the women's squad with a gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle. Schult claimed nine points for the victory with a time of 2:06.09 to beat the Eagles second-place finisher by .58 of a second. The sophomore raced for 10 points in her two individual races for the meet. 

Freshman Victoria Radcliffe recorded eight points for the meet with two silver medals. In the 400-yard IM, Radcliffe fell short one second from a top finish with a time of 4:50.50. Later in the meet, the freshman raced in the 100-yard breaststroke where the contest remained neck-to-neck until the finish. The Ellicott City, Md., native came in just .01 second short of a gold medal finish, posting a time of 1:13.15.

Sophomore Andria Moyer added four points in her two individual races for the meet, with fourth-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (28.14) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.08). 

In final race of the meet for the women, juniors Melissa Alessandrini and Brittany Steele, freshman Layne Gable, and Schult grabbed two more points with a fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay racing for a time of 4:03.17. 

The Sea Gulls head on the road February 1 for the final meet of the season before the conference championships, as SU takes on St. Mary's College of Maryland. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
