Four Sea Gulls net hat tricks as SU downs McDaniel 20-5

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up a mid-week win on Wednesday, 20-5, over McDaniel College at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury struck early and often to build a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Senior attackman Luke Phipps took pass from senior attackman Rhett DePol and ripped shot from the right wing at the 13:50 mark for the first goal.

Phipps finished the game with a team-high four goals, while DePol and sophomore midfielder Thomas Cirillo tied to lead the team with five points each, as both scored three goals and dished out two assists.

DePol netted the second goal, taking a pass from senior long-stick midfielder Zeke Smith after a caused turnover, before Cirillo would score the third, driving right and planting a low shot in the cage.

Phipps and Cirillo would each score again in the quarter, sandwiching a goal by junior attackman Mike Kane; Kane took a pass from behind the cage by senior midfielder Greg Korvin and scored a low shot. He was the fourth Sea Gull with at least three goals in the game.

After Cirillo's second, SU took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

DePol netted a shot from the left wing with 11:39 left in the half to start the second quarter; less than one minute later, Phipps scored his third to give Salisbury an 8-0 lead.

Kane and Depol would account for Salisbury's final two goals of the half at the 6:00 and 5:20 marks, giving the Sea Gulls a 10-0 lead before McDaniel would score its first goal with 59 seconds left in the half.

With a 10-1 lead at halftime, Salisbury led in shooting, 29-4, faceoffs, winning 11-of-13, and ground balls 22-9.

Korvin began the second half, scoring his first goal just 43 seconds into the third quarter, rebuilding a double-digit lead.

After the final goals from Phipps and Cirillo and a goal from junior midfielder Sean Fitzgerald, SU took a 14-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, junior midfielder Kyle Goss netted his first goal of the season, while freshman attackman Carson Kalama netted two goals for the first scores of his career.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Taylor played over 45 minutes in the cage, while making one save in the win.

Salisbury will travel to No. 19 Gettysburg College for its next game on Saturday, as the Sea Gulls and Bullets will faceoff at 1 p.m.
