YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University tennis teams waited a few extra days but ended up taking its matches against York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon. The match was originally scheduled for last Friday but was washed away.
Men: Salisbury 8, York 1
Salisbury (7-2, 2-0 CAC) picked up its third-straight win and remains unbeaten early in the conference season.
Junior Daniel Albers teamed with classmate Demetri Vrahnos and picked up an 8-5 win in the No. 1 doubles position. Both would win their singles matches; Albers 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot and Vrahnos picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 position.
The Gunther brothers picked up a win in the No. 2 doubles position, 8-4. Senior Shane Gunther won his singles match in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore Shanon Gunther was victorious in the No. 5 matchup, 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Matthew McGaffney and freshman Grant Hudson finished up doubles play with an 8-6 win. Hudson won in the No. 6 singles slot 6-0, 6-1.
York (4-4, 0-2 CAC) picked up its lone point in the No. 4 position, as Daniel Erk won 6-2, 6-4.
Women: Salisbury 9, York 0
The women's team got back above the .500 mark and kept its unblemished record in conference play with the sweep of the York (1-7, 0-2 CAC) women.
Sophomore Natalie Savage and junior Roxanne Alban picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-2. Juniors Allison Lutz and Katie Youlios would win by the same score in the No. 2 position.
Savage picked up her second point of the match from the top singles spot, defeating Emily Price 6-2, 6-0. Youlios won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot, while Lutz didn't drop a game in the No. 3 position.
Junior Sam Babo and freshman Claudia Lohn rounded out doubles play with an 8-5 win. Lohn won in the No. 4 spot, 6-2 in the first set and needing extras game to take the second set, 7-5. Babo picked up another point for Salisbury (6-5, 2-0 CAC) from the No. 5 singles spot, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Charlotte Urian finished up singles play, picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Both teams return home for action this Friday, taking on Southern Virginia University. Those matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
