SALISBURY, Md. – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Sea Gulls Stadium, the No. 1 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team honored seven seniors with a 16-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory against Frostburg State University, as the Sea Gulls remain undefeated for the season.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors Katelyn Blondino, Shannon Carta, Halie Lear, Shelby Nemecek, Anna Sparr, Meghan Toomey and Ashton Wheatley were all recognized for their outstanding performances on and off the field. 

Carta started her senior day off in stunning fashion, scoring a quick goal in the opening 53 seconds. Frostburg's Emani Byrd lost the ball on an attempted clear in Bobcats' territory, and with a loose ball in front of the net, Carta scooped it and fired a low left shot past FSU goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum.

Frostburg (2-10, 0-4 CAC) had no answer for the Salisbury (12-0, 4-0 CAC) offense or defense, as the Sea Gulls scored nine more goals in the first half and only allowed six shot attempts, three on goal. 

Following Carta's opening goal, junior Bethany Baer tacked on her first of a tied game-high four less than three minutes later. Receiving the ball at the top of the fan, the midfielder weaved through the defense for a shot over the left shoulder of the keeper. 

Carta and Baer kept the offense rolling, both finding the back of the net within 43 seconds of each other to move the score to 4-0. Carta scored first with 22:54 left in the half, while Baer followed up on a free-position attempt with 22:11 remaining. 

Less than a minute later, sophomore Megan Wallenhorst added her first of the game, receiving a pass from the backside by Carta. 

In the remainder of the half, five more goals would be recorded, two on free-position attempts by Baer and junior Kylie Hanley and three goals by Nemecek.

At the half, Salisbury had won 7-of-11 draw controls, while the Gulls outshot the Bobcats, 24-6. Forcing 12 Frostburg turnovers for the half, SU scooped 11 groundballs to the Bobcats' two.

Frostburg started the second half going on a four-goal run in the first 4:30, but Salisbury would halt any comeback attempt answering back with five straight. 

Wallenhorst started the run for the Sea Gulls, scoring with 24:44 remaining. Baer recorded the assist on the play, making a pass from the back right side of the goal to the front left to a cutting Wallenhorst. The sophomore pulled in the pass for a bottom-left finish to move the score to 11-4.

Baer and Nemecek would put their fourth goals in through the next two minutes. Sophomores Samantha Duranti and Melissa Webster finished off the five-goal run before the Bobcats added their final two for the game. 

Freshman Gabbi Nieves put on the finishing touch for the Sea Gulls, scoring the 16th goal with 1:05 remaining, on an unassisted drive down the right side of the fan for a low shot. 

The defense for Salisbury only allowed 15 shots for the game, 11 on goal. Causing 14 turnovers to the Bobcats' five, SU picked up 20 groundballs led by junior Dominique DiPino with a team-high three. 

Baer and Nemecek paced the offense with four goals apiece. Baer added two assists to her impressive performance for a game-high six points for the game. 

Wheatley recorded her 11th victory protecting the cage, making five saves in her 52:05 on the field. The senior also picked up two groundballs for the game, moving her into sole possession of fifth place in program history with 113. 

The women are back in action on Tuesday, April 8, as the Sea Gulls travel to Newport News, Va., for a matchup against conference newcomer Christopher Newport University. First draw is set for 5 p.m.
