Sea Gulls split two matches; Defeat Frostburg, drop contest to Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team split two matches on Saturday, taking its match against Frostburg State University 9-0, while dropping its second matchup of the day, against No. 21 University of Mary Washington, 7-2.

Salisbury 9, Frostburg State 0

The Sea Gulls extended their winning streak to four matches, each by shutout, against Frostburg State (2-8, 0-3 CAC) to begin the day.

Sophomore Natalie Savage and junior Roxanne Alban, in the No. 1 spot, and junior Sam Babo and freshman Claudia Lohn, in the No. 3 position, each took their matches 8-1. In the No. 2 slot, juniors Allison Lutz and Katie Youlios won their match 8-2.

Savage, playing in the top singles spot, and senior Charlotte Urian, at No. 6, each won 6-0, 6-0.

Youlios took the No. 2 matchup 6-2, 6-2, while her doubles partner, Lutz, took her match 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot.

Lohn took the No. 4 matchup 6-1, 6-2, and Babo was victorious in the No. 5 position 6-2, 6-0.

No. 21 Mary Washington 7, Salisbury 2

Salisbury (8-6, 3-1 CAC) saw its winning streak come to an end in the back end of its doubleheader.

Savage and Alban faced the top team in the Atlantic South region, Lindsay Raulston and Shelly Harris, in the No. 1 doubles matchup. Savage and Alban would test their Mary Washington (12-6, 5-0 CAC) counterparts but would fall 8-2.

Babo and Lohn were in the No. 3 slot, dropping their match 8-2.

Lutz and Youlios had the match of the doubles round, battling their opponents throughout the contest. Down 3-2, the Sea Gull duo won four straight games to take control of the matchup. The two teams would split the next two games before the maroon and gold would break serve to capture its first point of the match, winning 8-4.

The Eagles would secure the match in singles play, taking the first three matches to seal the win. Babo would drop her match, in the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0. Alban would finish next, in the No. 2 position, dropping her match 6-2, 6-0. Mary Washington would claim the match with the result from the No. 3 slot, with Youlios falling 6-1, 6-2.

Lutz would fall from the No. 4 position in the lineup, 6-1, 6-0.

The No. 1 singles match was a highly anticipated contest, between Savage and Raulston. Savage came into the match ranked No. 15 in the Atlantic South, while Raulston came in as the No. 12 player in the region.

Savage would take the first set 6-1, and fought from behind for a 6-4 second set to take the match. In the first set, Savage won the first three, lost a game, and then took the final three games to take the set.

In the second set, Savage was down 3-1 before breaking serve to pull to 3-2. The two would trade games to make it 4-3 before Savage pulled out the next three games for the win.

Lohn finished singles play from the No. 5 spot with the only match to go to a third set. Lohn took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-1 to force the deciding set. The Madison, Conn., native played hard in the third set as the early-evening shadows began to cover the SU Outdoor Courts.

The third set was back-and-forth, with Mary Washington's Paige Anne Weinburg taking the deciding set 6-4.

The Sea Gulls will wrap up a busy weekend tomorrow, traveling to Newport News, Va., to take on Christopher Newport University. That match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
