Women's tennis sweeps Bridgewater for third win of 2015

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 win on Sunday morning against Bridgewater (Va.) College at the Salisbury University Indoor Tennis Center.

The Sea Gulls gave up just eight games in doubles play, paced by a pair of 8-1 wins.

It was sophomore Claudia Lohn and freshman Charlotte Walker who earned the first point of the day, in their 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and senior Allison Lutz and freshman Megan Soderlund were not far behind at No. 3 with a win by the same score.

Senior Katie Youlios and junior Natalie Savage were forced to work a bit harder in the top singles spot, but still came away with an 8-6 win. The Salisbury pair picked up an early break and rode that to the win, with Savage working through a handful of deuce points to avoid the break, retaining a 4-2 lead. Salisbury's pair survived five break-point chances in the final game, as Savage held serve for the win.

Lohn would earn the first singles point for Salisbury, in quick fashion, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Soderlund locked up the Salisbury win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4.

The top singles match was on serve through six games as Savage and Bridgewater's Maria Hawkins traded early breaks, but Savage would come up with a win on Hawkins' service game to grab a 4-3 lead, and hold serve with a love game to go up 5-3 ripping a winner up the line. One more break would close out the first set, 6-3, in Savage's favor. Savage took the second set, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Marla O'Bryan would hold serve in the opening game of the match, but Youlios would grab the next six games, taking the opening set, 6-1, and winning the second, 6-3.

Lutz earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 while Walker closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.

The Sea Gulls return to action next Saturday, hosting Millsaps College, the No. 12-ranked team in the Atlantic South Region; that match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
