Balanced offense leads Sea Gulls past Pride

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team grabbed its second win of the season, defeating Widener University on Monday afternoon 12-2 at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Sea Gulls got going early, as junior Thomas Cirillo drove down the right side and planted a low shot into the cage at the 12:36 mark of the first quarter for a 1-0 lead.

After junior Jake Rotman ripped a shot from the left wing for SU's second score, junior James Burton drove to the crease on the left side and slipped a shot between the keeper and the left pipe with 41 seconds left in the first quarter, giving the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead to end the period.

Less than two minutes into the second, senior Mike Kane picked up a ground ball in Widener's defensive end on a Pride turnover and found himself in front of the cage and one-on-one with the goalie, before netting his first of the game.

Widener scored on a man-up chance to get on the board, but two more SU goals to end the half gave the Sea Gulls a 6-1 lead at the break.

With 8:20 left, Kane found the cage again on another transition play, as freshman Chase Berquist found Kane all alone on the crease, before Berquist would score one of his own on the left side of the crease on a pass across the front of the keeper from senior Kyle Goss.

At the half, Salisbury was leading in shots 25-5, while winning five-of-nine faceoffs and converting on 11-of-12 clear attempts.

The Sea Gulls pushed their lead to seven in the third quarter, with goals two minutes apart from one another. Junior Chris Joyce scored the first at the 11:28 mark on a pass from junior Adam Stork, before Burton added his second, driving down the right side with 9:28 to go.

Berquist tallied a second goal just 55 seconds into the final period, as Salisbury netted four more in the quarter to cap the victory.

Kane, Burton, and Berquist tied for the team high in goals with two each, while Berquist added an assist for a game-high three points.

Senior Dan Feeney played 55 minutes in the cage and made seven saves for his second win of the season.

Salisbury will next be in action on Saturday, February 28, hosting Gettysburg College at Sea Gull Stadium for a 1 p.m., opening faceoff.
