WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 1 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team fell to Catholic University of America in a heart-breaking 13-12 loss in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

After going down by one less than a minute in, sophomore Gabbi Nieves tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal three minutes later.

Catholic would score again to take the lead less than four minutes later, but the Gulls would go on a three-goal scoring drive to capture a 4-2 lead. Junior Megan Wallenhorst, sophomore Hannah Young and senior Bethany Baer each scored goals in the run, and senior Kate Haker notched an assist.

The Cardinals evened the score at 4-4 before the Sea Gulls scored two more goals in less than a minute to give Salisbury a 6-4 lead with 5:47 left in the first half. Wallenhorst found the back of the net on the first one, catching a pass from senior Kara O'Rourke. Nieves followed up 11 seconds later with her second finish of the game.

SU (1-1) gave up one more goal in the half and went into the break with a 6-5 advantage.

Catholic would build as high as a three-goal lead in the second half, going up 11-8 with 10:58 left in regulation, but Salisbury would battle back.

The Sea Gulls rallied to score three-straight goals of their own, in the next three and a half minutes, highlighted by a goal from Nieves, to tie the game at 11-11.

At 5:04, Catholic scored again, but Salisbury answered just 1:30 later. O'Rourke, with her fourth assist of the game, found Baer for the finish to draw the score even and send the game to overtime, the second-consecutive contest for the Gulls in extra time.

In overtime, Cardinal Nicole Laitner would score the goal to put Catholic ahead, 13-12, which eventually played out to be the game winner.

Young tried to answer when she took a shot on goal with 2:15 left, but Catholic's goalkeeper would record the save to keep Salisbury off the board.

Nieves and Young each recorded hat tricks in the game, while Baer, Wallenhorst and Haker each added two goals.

Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Harmke garnered a career-high 10 saves for the Sea Gulls, playing all 66 minutes in front of the net, while Tricia Pehnke notched nine saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Salisbury will be back in action on Saturday, March 7 when it travels to Lexington, Virginia for a matchup against No. 12 Washington and Lee University. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
