No. 14 Gulls cruise past Knights in CAC matchup

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The No. 14 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team took to the road for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup against Southern Virginia University Friday afternoon, and scoring early and often, it recorded an 18-1 victory to move to 2-0 in the league, 4-2 overall.

Of the 18 goals by the Gulls, 14 players found the back of the net led by two goals apiece by senior Kate Haker, junior Katelin Talbert and freshmen Dana King and Caley Prunier. Senior Kara O'Rourke, Haker and freshman Sammi Quilter all tied for game highs in points with three each.

Salisbury (4-2, 2-0 CAC) went unanswered through the first half of play, scoring 11 times to take a double-digit advantage into the half. Haker started the scoring off with an unassisted finish just 23 seconds into the game. A goal would be scored in each minute of play through the first four minutes, seeing Talbert, junior Samantha Duranti and Haker push the score to 4-0 by the 25:40 mark.

Keeping the momentum, sophomore Gabbi Nieves tallied her contribution before Talbert, junior Megan Wallenhorst and sophomore Hannah Young finished off the scoring for the veterans of the squad for the day.

Prior to the half, freshmen Alissa Talbert, Allie Hynson and Quilter all found the back of the net for the first time in their collegiate careers.

The final 30 minutes of play showed plenty of ball movement by the Sea Gulls, waiting for the right opportunity to score. Quilter, with the ball behind the goal, found sophomore Ariana Maxwell cutting in front of the crease. Receiving the ball high, Maxwell fired the shot in high on Knights' goalkeeper Cammi Miller for her first goal of the season at the 23:12 mark.

Prunier sandwiched Southern Virginia's lone goal of the game with the first two collegiate finishes of her career, before classmates Emma Wall and Kristen Murphy added their firsts of their careers. Quilter and King connected on the final two goals of the game, as King, who has recently recovered from a season-ending injury from last season, found the back of the net on both.

Besides a solid offensive effort, the Sea Gull defense only allowed four shots for the game. Scooping 11 ground balls for the game, Salisbury was led by senior Hayden Hutzell and sophomores Kayla Miller, Marcy Lenz and Young all with two apiece.

Freshman Gianna Falcone recorded the victory in net, playing between the pipes for 15:30. Junior Chelsea Weinstein finished out the first half, making two saves on two shots, while senior Alyssa Harmke played the entire second half making one save.

The women return home for their toughest matchup of the season so far, as Salisbury welcomes No. 2 State University of New York at Cortland to Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday, March 22. The Red Dragons were the only team the Gulls dropped a contest to last season before cruising through the postseason to the program's third national title. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
