No. 7 Sea Gulls roll past Southern Virginia, 18-0, in CAC play

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Eleven different Sea Gulls found the back of the net on Saturday afternoon as the No. 7 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team cruised past Southern Virginia University, 18-0, in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Less than four minutes into the contest, sophomore Kristen Murphy put Salisbury on the board on a free-position shot to give the Gulls an early 1-0 advantage.

After Southern Virginia's Avery Bishop won the subsequent draw control, sophomore Dana King quickly forced a turnover and sophomore Emma Wall came up with the groundball to give the Sea Gulls possession at 25:49.

With Salisbury on offense, junior Gabbi Nieves made the Knights pay after she cut into the fan and took a ball from senior Megan Wallenhorst, finishing to the low left to put the Sea Gulls up 2-0.

The Sea Gull midfielders continued their dominant play, which lasted the whole game, as freshman Gabrielle Mongno caused a turnover and King picked up a groundball at 24:04 to keep the Knights from clearing the ball; Southern Virginia would only complete one clear on the afternoon.

After Mongno's caused turnover, she kept it going on offense, finding the back of the net on a feed from Wallenhorst to go up 3-0 at 23:35.

Two minutes later, Nieves dashed into the center of the fan and scored her second goal of the contest to give Salisbury a 4-0 advantage.

Junior Ariana Maxwell notched two-straight goals to put the Gulls up by six, before junior Hannah Young scored two in a row, including one off a dish from freshman Lindsey Wagner.

Freshman Martha Hutzell continued the two-in-a-row trend, tallying the first goal of her career, and following it up with another score with 8:57 left in the first quarter off an assist from sophomore Alissa Talbert to go up 10-0.

With 7:03 left before halftime, freshman Morgon Von Schmidt scored the first goal of her career off a feed from sophomore Maddie Manzoni before sophomore Sammi Quilter capped the scoring in the half to put the Gulls up 12-0 at the break; Quilter would finish with a game-high three goals on the day.

Salisbury tallied six more goals in the second half to finalize the score at 18-0, with scores coming from junior Marcy Lenz, freshman Ryan Schrader, Quilter, and Wagner.

Nieves, Lenz, Hutzell, Young, and Maxwell each finished with two scores on the afternoon. Junior Kayla Miller led the Gulls on defense with three groundballs, while senior Samantha Duranti and Talbert each caused three turnovers in the midfield.

Senior Chelsea Weinstein played all 60 minutes in front of the net for Salisbury, allowing no goals on the day and earning her first win of the season.

The Sea Gulls will be back at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday, March 23, for a big matchup against No. 2 Franklin and Marshall College. That game is set for 4 p.m.
