Gulls' big first half leads to 28-5 victory at Marymount

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team went on the road to take on Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Marymount (Va.) University and took down the Saints, 28-5.

Thomas Cirillo got things going early for Salisbury, tallying one off a Brendan Bromwell feed just 56 seconds into the game.

Starting at the 12:10 mark, Brady Dashiell connected on goals just 12 seconds apart, coming off feeds from James Burton and Andrew Ternahan, respectively. Ternahan ended the day with a game-high six groundballs on the day to go along with two caused turnovers.

Jake Rotman and Christian Ottenritter then notched goals before Max Johnson got the Saints on the board. However, Salisbury outscored the Saints, 6-1 the rest of the opening quarter to go up 11-2 heading into the second.

One big goal in the Gulls' early 6-1 run was scored by Duncan Campbell, getting his first collegiate goal.

Salisbury got the second quarter started like the first, scoring in the first minute off a Burton finish.

Including the Burton goal, the Gulls outscored Marymount, 8-0 in the second quarter to bring the score to 19-2 at the half. Notching their first goals of the day in the second were Garrett Reynolds, Kevin Bartenfelter, and Nick Garbarino. Also providing some first-half offense for Salisbury was senior defensive midfielder Davis Anderson, who notched two assists in the opening half.

At the break, Salisbury held a 26-11 edge in groundballs and outshot the Saints, 32-5. Salisbury successfully cleared the ball on every attempt, going 15-for-15 in the first 30 minutes.

Colin Reymann got the start in net for Salisbury and got the win, stopping two shots in 30 minutes between the pipes.

The Gulls kept the momentum going into the second half, once again scoring in the first minute to open up the third quarter, as Carson Kalama connected on his second of the day.

Following Kalama's marker, Blondino put one home to get his 100th career point at Salisbury. After Blondino's historic marker, Salisbury outscored Marymount 3-1 the rest of the quarter with Anderson, Hunter Schaeffer, and Troy Miller all adding goals.

Freshman Connor Wallenhorst notched his first-career goal for Salisbury to open up the fourth quarter.

Wallenhorst's goal was followed by goals from Garbarino, Tyler Snyder, and Corey Gwin, while the Saints scored two fourth-quarter goals to bring the game to its 28-5 final score.

Along with Ternahan, Will Nowesnick also had a big outing on the defensive end, causing three turnovers and scooping up five groundballs.

At game's end, Salisbury had a 58-23 advantage in shots, while scooping up 18 more groundballs than the Saints.

Salisbury returns to play on Wednesday, April 6 for a midweek conference battle with Christopher Newport University. That game is set for 5 p.m., in Newport News, Virginia.
