Fredricksburg, VA - The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams competed against the University of Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon, as the men lost 141-64, while the women were defeated 157-48.
Men
Junior Conor Johnston started the mens squad off on a high note with a thrilling finish in the 50-yard freestyle and earning all nine points for the Sea Gulls. Johnston, the Annapolis, MD native edged out fellow teammate Jake Blazer with a finger-tip finish, posting a time of 22.95 seconds, just .03 seconds faster than the fellow gull.
In the 100-yard backstroke, senior Okan Eyigor also shined for Salisbury as he swam his way into first place, touching the wall at 54.80 seconds.
Sophomore Peter Moyer took home a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, recording a time of 10:24.00, earning four more points for the maroon and gold. Moyer alongside fellow teammates Andrew Ward, Scott Schirmer and Max Lucas missed nine points by a fingertip in the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:31.40, a mere .30 seconds behind their rivals.
Stephen Arcidiacono also earned a second-place finish on the day in the 100-yard fly, notching a time of 56.30 seconds.
Women
Senior Victoria Radcliffe led the women's side as she recorded a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, recording a time of 54.80 seconds. Radcliffe also shined for Salisbury as she earned second-place in the 50-yard freestyle, recording a time of 25.43 seconds, just .16 seconds behind Shannon Coryell of Mary Washington.
Radcliffe, alongside fellow teammates Bizu Baldinazzo, Emma Tarnosky and Layne Gable also brought home a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, recording a time of 1:44.23 for the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury will be back in action Saturday, January 28 when it hosts the last home meet of the season against St. Mary's College of Maryland in another Capital Athletic Conference showdown. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
