Women's tennis rolls to two CAC victories on senior day

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team improved to 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play with wins over Penn State University-Harrisburg and York College of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Salisbury 9, Penn State-Harrisburg 0

The Sea Gulls made quick work of the Lions (1-8, 0-3 CAC) taking a swift 3-0 lead after doubles play, allowing just one game to Harrisburg.

Senior Claudia Lohn and freshman Jordan Schaefer won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, while junior Sage Cole and sophomore Taylor Cooper did the same at No. 3. Freshmen Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi won 8-1 at the top doubles spot.

In singles play, no Sea Gull lost more than four games in their straight-set wins to finish off the victory. Sophomore Shannon Hickman collected a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 while freshman Kayla Allen went for a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 and Kwedi won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.

Cooper won her first set at No. 2 by a 6-2 score, before finishing the match by a 6-0 score in the second with Cole winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and freshman Emma Sams collecting a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Salisbury 6, York 3

Before the Sea Gulls' second match of the day, the program honored Lohn, the team's lone senior.

The Spartans (4-3, 1-2 CAC) won two of the three doubles matches, with Salisbury's only point coming at No. 3 where Cole and Cooper won 8-5. Kezman and Kwedi dropped their No. 1 match in a tie-breaker 9-8 (7-5) with Lohn and Schaefer falling at No. 2 by an 8-4 score.

In singles play, Cooper earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 with Lohn collecting a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3. Kwedi battled to 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Hickman earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6.

Schaefer narrowly fell at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-4 and the final match on court was a lengthy, three-set affair won by Kezman 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

The Sea Gulls return to action next weekend, traveling to Southern Virginia University on Friday, April 7, and Frostburg State University on April 8.
