Gwin nets six; men's lacrosse rolls to 18-6 victory over Widener

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse program downed visiting Widener University on Saturday afternoon, 18-6. 10 different players netted goals for the Sea Gulls as Corey Gwin tallied a career-high six goals, including three in the fourth quarter, to aid in the victory.

Salisbury (3-0) found themselves trailing 1-0 in the opening three minutes of the contest but Gwin managed to level the score line after finishing off a nice pass from Zach Pompea, who tallied three points for the afternoon including his third goal of the season.

The Sea Gulls blew the game wide open in the second quarter tallying seven goals in the frame to take an 8-4 lead into the break. Seven different players tallied markers in the quarter including three straight goals to open the second quarter of action by Garrett Reynolds, Tyler Snyder, and Pierre Armstrong.

Widener's (0-1) John Dunbar netted his first goal of the season to break the Salisbury scoring run and cut the deficit to just two, 4-2, before Armstrong tallied his second marker of the afternoon. The quarter was capped with an impressive goal by Jeremiah LaClair, who finished his afternoon with two goals on two shots and two groundballs.

Salisbury dominated the final 30 minutes of play outscoring the Pride 10-2 in the final half of action including a seven-goal fourth quarter. The maroon and gold netted the final nine goals of the afternoon including two from Gwin on man-up opportunities.

Freshman Jarrett Bromwell, capped the exciting second half for Salisbury netting his first collegiate goal on a man-up opportunity for the Gulls finishing off a nice pass from senior Hunter Schaeffer. As a team Salisbury was 6-of-7 on its extra-man opportunities while Widener was 0-of-3.

The maroon and gold defense was stifling throughout the afternoon forcing 35 Widener turnovers including 11 in the four quarter alone. Kyle Tucker led the defensive unit with six caused turnovers while Will Nowesnick recorded three of his own.

Tucker finished tied for the team-high in groundballs with seven as junior Brett Malamphy also picked up seven and was dominant from the face-off X winning 8-of-9 for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, February 24 when it travels to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to take on the No. 13 Bullets. Face-off between the Sea Gulls and Gettysburg is set for 1 p.m.
