Women's tennis falls to Methodist

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team closed out its first weekend of the 2018 season with a 6-3 loss to Methodist University in a neutral-site match played at the University of Mary Washington on Sunday.

The Monarchs (3-1) were able to pick up two points in doubles play. The Sea Gulls got a point at No. 1 doubles where the pair of sophomores Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi picked up an 8-4 victory.

Salisbury's Jordan Schaefer and Sydney Soto dropped a narrow decision at No. 2, falling 9-7, while junior Taylor Cooper and freshman Ariana Leggio fell 8-1 at No. 3.

In singles play, it was again Kezman and Kwedi, at the top of the lineup, earning the Sea Gulls' two points. Kwedi picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles with Kezman winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.

Salisbury (1-1) battled in close matches in the other four contests, with Cooper falling 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 3 and Solto falling 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4.

Schaefer dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 5 while junior Shannon Hickman lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Sea Gulls return to action Friday when they host Catholic University of America in Salisbury's home opener, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
