Women's tennis falls in CAC semifinal at No. 24 CNU, 5-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal match on Tuesday afternoon, 5-1, at No. 24 Christopher Newport University.

The second-seeded Captains earned the first two points in doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 3 by Emily Morgan and Isabelle Wessel over Sage Cole and Taylor Cooper before Alexandra Drye and Johanna Ranta-Aho won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles against Jordan Schaefer and Sydney Soto.

Salisbury's lone point in the match came from the No. 1 doubles spot where sophomores Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi earned an 8-5 win against McKinney Harwood and Kate Huck.

Kezman fell at No. 1 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score before Shannon Hickman dropped her No. 6 match 6-0, 6-1 and the match was sealed when Wessel finished off a 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 5 against Schaefer.

Three matches were not completed, though Kwedi held a lead in her No. 2 match against Harwood. Harwood took the first set 6-1 before Kwedi evened things with a 6-4 win in the second set and led 2-0 in the third when the team match was completed.

At No. 3 singles, Cooper was trailing 6-3, 5-4 and Soto was down 6-3, 3-3 in the No. 4 match.
