Women's tennis tops Stevenson, falls to No. 24 CNU on senior day

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, topping Stevenson University before falling to No. 24 Christopher Newport University. Prior to the start of the matches, the Sea Gulls recognized their two seniors Taylor Cooper and Shannon Hickman.

Salisbury 9, Stevenson 0

The Sea Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Mustangs (8-4) after doubles play, with the pair of Cooper and Hickman getting an 8-2 win at No. 2 as part of the doubles sweep. Salisbury's other two doubles pairs were able to earn 8-1 wins with junior Jordan Schaefer and sophomore Sydney Soto getting the win at No. 1 and junior Ariana Leggio and freshman Karlie Allen winning at No. 3.

In singles play, it was six straight-set wins for the Gulls. Freshman Sarah Dover earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 while Kathryn Allen won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 and Karlie Allen won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.

Soto earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 while junior Annika Kezman took a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 and Kayla Allen won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4.

Christopher Newport 9, Salisbury 0

The Captains (10-7, 5-1 CAC) earned the three doubles matches for the quick lead with Cooper and Dover falling at No. 3 by an 8-3 score while sophomore Laura Brown and Kezman fell at No. 1 by an 8-2 score and Soto and Schaefer were defeated 8-0 at No. 2.

Salisbury (11-5, 5-1 CAC) battle through singles, but were unable to get a win. With Soto being defeated 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Hickman dropping a contest by a same score at No. 6 the Captains sealed the victory.

Kezman took a 6-0, 6-4 defeat at No. 1 while Schaefer picked up the first set at No. 5 by a 6-2 score before falling in the second set 6-4 and dropping the third-set super tiebreaker 10-8.

Cooper fell in her first set at No. 3 in a tiebreaker and nearly drew even in the second, but ultimately fell 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Brown was defeated at No. 2 by a 6-4, 6-3 score.

The Sea Gulls conclude CAC regular season play on Saturday, April 20, traveling to No. 13 University of Mary Washington. That match will begin at 1 p.m.
