Women's tennis falls in CAC semifinals to Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team got knocked off in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Christopher Newport University, falling to the second-seeded Captains, 5-0.

In doubles play, the Sea Gulls (12-7) had their closest battles in the top two spots, with junior Annika Kezman and sophomore Laura Brown dropping an 8-5 contest at No. 1 while junior Jordan Schaefer and sophomore Sydney Soto fell at No. 2 by the same score. Senior Taylor Cooper and freshman Sarah Dover suffered an 8-1 defeat at No. 3.

In singles play, the Captains (13-7) picked up the two points needed in the first two completed matches. Kezman fell at the No. 1 spot by a 6-1, 6-3 score while Schaefer suffered a 6-4, 6-0 setback at No. 5.

CNU led in the other four matches on court at the time the contest was sealed. Brown trailed 6-1, 4-1 at No. 2 while Cooper battled to a tiebreaker in her first set at No. 3, but was down 7-6 (7-3), 5-0. Soto was down 6-0, 5-2 at No. 4 with senior Shannon Hickman trailing 6-3, 1-0 at No. 6.
