Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Horner’s hat trick pushes No. 3 Field Hockey past No. 1 Rowan, 3-2

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Freshman McKenna Horner's three goals, including the game-winner in the final minute of the game, gave the third-ranked Salisbury University field hockey a 3-2 road win over the top-ranked Rowan Profs on Wednesday to become the last unbeaten team in the nation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury scored first in the 11th minute of the game. Alayna Gigliotti picked off a high pass on a clear and pushed the ball ahead to McKenna Horner. A Rowan defender nearly stole the pass but Horner corralled the loose ball and blasted a shot past the keeper for the opening goal of the contest.
  • Rowan tied the game less than a minute later when Kristiina Castagnola passed the ball in front of the cage to Julia Patrone, who scooted the ball lower right corner past Mackenzie Peacock to tie the game at one.
  • After a scoreless second quarter, Castagnola gave the Profs the 2-1 lead midway through the third quarter on a bouncing ball inside the arc that deflected off a Sea Gull defender and into the cage.
  • Horner tied the game at two in the 48th minute of the game after McKenzie Jamison's through ball found Horner's stick. Horner's backhanded shot rocketed past a diving keeper to level the contest.
  • In the closing stages of the game, the Sea Gulls pressed the ball up the field and Jamison passed the ball across to Horner on the right side of the cage and one-timed the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal with 35 seconds left in the contest.
  • Rowan got a pair of penalty corners as time expired on the clock but the Salisbury defense clamped down to seal the ranked win.
