Markman wins triple jump, Field Athlete of the Meet; Men take second, Women fourth at C2C Indoors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Rashawn Markman won a second conference title and earned Men's Field Athlete of the Meet, highlighting a busy second and final day for the Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon at Vince Brown Track.

The Sea Gull men earned 111 points to take the team silver medal, finishing behind hosts Christopher Newport, who won the men's title with 200 points. UC Santa Cruz finished third with 95 points.

The Sea Gull women finished fourth with 76 points. CNU (184), Santa Cruz (126) and Mary Washington (88) filled out the women's podium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men

One day after claiming the league long jump title, Rashawn Markman also captured gold in the triple jump, breaking his own SU school record with a distance of 14.50 meters (47-7). Markman, who earned C2C Men's Field Athlete of the Meet for his double championships, now boasts the 13th-best triple jump mark in NCAA Division III this indoor season.
Salisbury took three of the top four slots in the triple jump, with Sherrod Frye (13.42m, 44-0.5) finishing third and Zion Wamley (12.58m, 41-3.25) fourth.
Nazaire Spencer earned a pair of podium finishes, taking a silver in the 400-meter dash (51.91) and a bronze in the 200-meter dash (23.35).
Dylan Haun took second place in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 1.84 meters (6-0.5).
Luis Smith earned a bronze in the shot put at 13.80 meters (45-3.5).
Salisbury's 4x400-meter relay team of Spencer, Isaiah Myers, Mike Heinz and Ryan Temple narrowly missed out on breaking the tape. Their second-place time of 3:30.32 ran just eleven-hundredths of a second behind the winning team of CNU.

Women

Danielle Jensen captured third place in the triple jump, registering a distance of 10.19 meters (33-5.25). Abbie Potter finished right behind Jensen in fourth place at 9.98 meters (32-9).
Heather Delaplaine finished fourth in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:27.99.
Makayla Davis narrowly missed the podium in the shot put, finishing fourth at 10.62 meters (34-10.25).
The 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth, with Courtney Martin, Maddie Rathmann, Abby Simmons and Delaplaine crossing the line in 4:32.88.
Sydney Ruckel took fifth in the 3,000-meter run at 10:37.94.
Martin finished the 60-meter hurdles in 10.25 seconds, earning fifth place.

UP NEXT

Select Sea Gulls will return to Newport News next Sunday for the CNU Qualifier and Combined Events.
First events from the Vince Brown Track are slated for 9 a.m.
