NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Aiming to improve his bid for March's NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, thrower Travis Zimmerman of the Salisbury University men's track and field teams won his event as the lone Sea Gull to participate at the Christopher Newport University Qualifier on Sunday afternoon at Vince Brown Track.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Zimmerman, a sophomore from Fairfield, Pa., came short of his previous high but finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 15.89 meters (52-1.75).
• His personal best stands at 17.69 meters (58-0.5), set at the Eastern Shore Invitational on Jan. 28, which currently stands 20th nationally in Division III. The top 20 marks will qualify for the national championships on Mar. 11-12 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
• Last week Zimmerman won the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) indoor championship in the weight throw (17.27m, 56-8), also held at CNU.
• "Travis has been working on some technical aspects of his throws this week," said Sea Gull head track and field coach Jim Jones. "I know he will continue to perfect his technique, and this experience will help him in the future."

UP NEXT

• The Sea Gulls will now split their attention between the end of the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor next weekend.
• SU will send some athletes to the South Region NCAA Final Qualifier, hosted by Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., on Saturday.
• Others will stay on campus as Salisbury hosts the outdoor Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
