Markman breaks triple jump record; Track & Field competes at Richard Drake Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury University indoor track and field teams stood out in a crowded field at the inaugural Richard Drake Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. No team scores were tracked during the meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men

Freshman Rashawn Markman turned in another solid all-around performance in both field and track events. The reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Field Athlete of the Week took second place in the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 14.43 meters (47-4.25) that currently ranks 13th nationally. Markman's distance broke the Salisbury indoor men's triple jump record, surpassing Donovan Beckett-Simms' (14.36m, 47-1.5) 2018 record by nearly three inches.
In the long jump, Markman earned a top-five finish, landing in fifth at a personal-best 6.86 meters (22-6.25) that places him 44th nationally. Markman also competed in the prelims of the 60-meter dash (7.20, 17th) and the 200-meter dash (personal-best 23.59, 27th).
Wyatt Parks earned a podium finish in the pole vault, soaring 3.70 meters (12-1.5) to claim third place.
Luis Smith took the bronze in the shot put at 13.60 meters (44-7.5). He also finished fifth in the weight throw (personal-best 15.07 meters, 49-5.5).
Travis Zimmerman finished third in the weight throw with a distance of 16.26 meters (53-4.25). He also slotted eighth in the shot put (13.00m, 42-8).
Matt Grossi completed his mile run debut in 4:31.26, good for seventh place.
Nazaire Spencer earned a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter run, clocking in at 52.11 seconds.
Mike Heinz's 2:04.90 mark in the 800-meter run earned him a 10th-place finish.

Women

Sydney Ruckel improved on her 3,000-meter run time for the season, taking third place in the event in 10:48.20.
Danielle Jensen just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump, soaring 10.64 meters (34-11).
Colleen Howard made her season debut in the high jump, finishing in fifth with a height of 1.57 meters (5-1.75).
Alexandra Jakubowski cracked the top 10 in the weight throw. Her 12.37-meter (40-7) mark was good for 10th place.

UP NEXT

The Sea Gulls are off next weekend in preparation for the inaugural C2C Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Christopher Newport, on Feb. 18-19.
Both days of the championship meet in Newport News, Va., will begin at 9 a.m.
