Markman places 16th in triple jump at indoor nationals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman triple jumper Rashawn Markman of the Salisbury University men's track and field team finished 16th in the event at the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, held on Saturday at JDL Fast Track Indoor Track & Field Complex.

RESULTS

Markman, a native of Waldwick, N.J., fouled on his first two attempts but completed a successful third jump with a distance of 14.03 meters (46-0.5). After entering the event with the 18th-best national mark, Markman finished two slots higher than his seeding.

Jonathan Wilburn of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the national triple jump championship with a distance of 15.49 meters (50-10), while Carnegie Mellon's Justin Kiefel (14.94m, 49-0.25) and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Shelvin Garrett (14.87m, 48-9.5) rounded out the podium.

"This was a good experience for Rashawn in his first year, and he will undoubtedly use this experience as motivation for his future," said Sea Gull track and field head coach Jim Jones.

Markman's appearance at nationals caps a historic rookie indoor campaign. He broke the school record in the triple jump twice, topping out at 14.50 meters (47-7) at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships to win the event. Markman was named C2C Men's Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the gold in both the triple jump and the long jump.

With the conclusion of the 2021-22 indoor season, Markman will shift gears and rejoin the Sea Gulls for the 2022 outdoor track and field slate. Salisbury heads down to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on March 17-19.
