Records fall, seniors honored at Eastern Shore Challenge

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University track and field teams honored their seniors, saw school records threatened and broken and earned a pair of top-two finishes at the Eastern Shore Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the SU Track & Field Complex.

The Sea Gull men eked out a team win with 248.83 points, overtaking second-place Christopher Newport (236) late in the competition. Marymount (Va.) [73.33] took the bronze, while Gallaudet (61.83) and Delaware State (25) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Sea Gull women finished second with a total of 156 points. CNU won the meet with 200 points, while Marymount (Va.) [96], Delaware State (69) and Gallaudet (49) rounded out the top five.

Before the afternoon's final race, Salisbury took time to honor its nine senior athletes who participated in their final home track meet: sprinters Makenzie Hirsch and Isaiah Myers; distance runners Christian Ciattei, Heather Delaplaine, Ethan Gray and Sydney Ruckel; hurdler Justin Speirs; thrower Alexandra Jakubowski and jumper Colleen Howard.

RESULTS

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men

  • Cameron Hasko shattered his personal record in the javelin throw, claiming gold with a distance of 60.40 meters (198-02). Hasko came within just five inches of Salisbury's school record in the new-style javelin throw and now boasts the 10th-best javelin mark in NCAA Division III.
  • Rashawn Markman earned a pair of golds in the long jump and triple jump. Markman threatened his personal record in the triple jump by clearing 14.45 meters (47-5), which slots him in eighth nationally. In the long jump he posted a winning distance of 6.68 meters (21-11).
  • Travis Zimmerman came close to matching his personal record in the hammer throw, winning the event at 53.35 meters (175-0).
  • Salisbury swept the top four spots in the 5,000-meter run. Matt Grossi won the event in 15:43.80, while Sam Bodmer (15:54.90), Jason Cave (15:45.82) and Austin Foote (16:41.63) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
  • Dylan Haun claimed gold in the high jump by clearing 1.85 meters (6-0.75), while Andrew McGinley finished in a three-way tie for second at 1.75 meters (5-8.75).
  • Mike Heinz set a new personal record by winning the 400-meter dash in 50.38 seconds. Ryan Temple finished third in the event in his own personal-best 51.45 seconds.
  • Ethan Gray won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:37.09.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Justin Tavares, Ian Mullen, Heinz and Temple claimed victory in a season-best time of 3:28.58.
  • Sherrod Frye finished top-four in all three of his individual events. Frye finished second in the 200-meter dash (22.86) while taking third in the triple jump (13.16m, 43-2.25) and fourth in the long jump (6.31m, 20-8.5).
  • Luis Smith (13.87m, 45-7) and Zimmerman (12.14m, 39-10) finished two-three, respectively, in the shot put.
  • Christian Ciattei finished second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:07.12. He also took fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:01.03.
  • Justin Speirs earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.05 seconds.
  • Jacob Shelton, Frye, Ryan Kramer and Markman combined for a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay at 42.59 seconds.
  • Shelton finished third in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 11.28 seconds.
  • Zion Wamley took third place in the triple jump at 6.34 meters (20-9.75).

Women

  • Sydney Ruckel added a fourth school record to her ledger in her final career home race. Ruckel won the 5,000-meter run in 18:13.92, breaking Alison Schwartz's 2017 mark by eight-and-a-half seconds. Ruckel now owns the fastest times in SU history in the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 meters, as well as the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
  • Alyssa Santoro (19:34.46), Allyson Wagner (20:03.18) and Maddie Rathmann (20:23.33) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, behind Ruckel in the 5,000-meter run.
  • Heather Delaplaine set a personal record in the 800-meter run with a race-winning time of 2:21.86. Abby Simmons took fifth place in a personal-best 2:29.84.
  • Colleen Howard won the high jump by clearing 1.60 meters (5-3).
  • Danielle Jensen set a personal record in the long jump, finishing third with a distance of 5.00 meters (16-5). Jensen also earned a pair of silver-medal finishes in the triple jump (10.23m, 33-6.75) and 100-meter hurdles (17.07).
  • Sophia Crozier-Carole finished second in the pole vault at 2.90 meters (9-6.25).
  • Courtney Martin finished third in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.27) and 400-meter hurdles (1:11.09).
  • Marley Blundell earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 1:04.17, while Destinee Ekanem finished fifth in 1:05.93.
  • Lian Peach took third place in the triple jump (9.90m, 32-5.75) and fourth in the long jump (4.70m, 15-5).
  • Alexandra Jakubowski finished fourth in the hammer throw at 37.65 meters (123-6).
  • Salisbury was the only school to field a 4x400-meter relay team. Ekanem, Erin Connelly, Simmons and Delaplaine posted a time of 4:29.81.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls will be off next weekend as they turn their attention to the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 6-7.
  • The two-day meet will be hosted by Christopher Newport University at TowneBank Stadium in Newport News, Va.
