NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams saw a plethora of athletes establish new personal bests and continued their run to midseason form over the two-day New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University, on Friday and Saturday at Townebank Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
- The Sea Gulls swept the podium in the 1,500-meter run, with Austin Foote (personal-best 4:09.05), Matt Grossi (4:10.84) and Christian Ciattei (4:11.69) taking home gold, silver and bronze, respectively.
- Sam Bodmer claimed victory in the 3,000-meter run, breaking the tape in a personal-best 9:04.92. Declan Burke took fifth in the event in 9:25.83, his own personal best.
- Ethan Gray crossed first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:07.32, his best mark of the season and four seconds off his personal best.
- Travis Zimmerman won the hammer throw, managing a distance of 52.68 meters (172-10).
- Cameron Hasko took home gold in the javelin throw, clocking in at 56.07 meters (183-11).
- Mike Heinz grabbed second in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a personal-best 50.49 seconds.
- Dylan Haun cleared a personal-best 1.88 meters (6-2) in the high jump, taking second place.
- Luis Smith finished top-seven in all three of his throwing events. Smith finished second in the shot put (13.86m, 45-5.75) while taking fourth in the hammer throw (40.09m, 131-6) and seventh in the discus throw (36.56m, 119-11).
- Justin Speirs finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 57.80 seconds.
- Justin Tavares, Speirs, Ian Mullen and Heinz combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, posting a time of 3:28.92.
- Sherrod Frye took a pair of top-10 finishes, placing sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.84) and 10th in the 100-meter dash (11.44).
- Jacob Shelton finished sixth in the 100-meter dash at 11.12 seconds.
Women
- Heather Delaplaine earned the gold in the 1,500-meter run, breaking the tape in a personal-best time of 4:53.86, nearly five seconds faster than her closest competitor. Alyssa Santoro took third in the 1,500-meter run in her own personal-best 5:01.09.
- Colleen Howard won the high jump by clearing 1.60 meters (5-3).
- Alexandra Jakubowski captured the bronze in the hammer throw with a distance of 35.79 meters (117-5).
- Julia Isaacson was the only competitor in the 3,000-meter run; she finished the race in a personal-best 12:47.84.
- Courtney Martin earned a pair of top-four finishes in the two hurdling races. Martin finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.11) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.11).
- Maddie Rathmann competed in two distance races that she had never run before, finishing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (13:25.82) and 10th in the 1,500-meter run (5:22.35).
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Destinee Ekanem, Erin Connelly, Abby Simmons and Delaplaine took third place in 4:25.54.
- Simmons took fifth place in the 800-meter run in 2:33.71.
- Sophia Crozier-Carole earned a sixth-place finish in the pole vault at 2.75 meters (9-0.25).
